Experiencing Time Through Chinese Film (Virtual Sample Class)

Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 6:00 PM until 7:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

As we enter the post-pandemic, it is commonly expressed that our “sense of time has changed”: sped up, slowed down, rendered static, jumbled, and disrupted. Cinema, one of the modern world’s most prized and popular artistic mediums, has been experimenting on, playing with, and deconstructing what conventional understandings of “time” has been for more than 130 years. Led by Professor Darwin Tsen, this lecture introduces how movies from the Chinese-speaking world engage our senses of time. Join this class to pick up some basic skills that will give you an eye for cinema, the start of becoming a lifelong connoisseur of film. You'll also get a glimpse into what courses offered by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences are like.
