Lessons from Frankenstein: The Afterlife of Literary Texts (Virtual Sample Class)

Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 6:00 PM until 7:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

How and why do certain literary works like Frankenstein, Shakespeare, or Jane Austen persist over time and enter cultural consciousness? What can we learn from this persistence? Can it tell us anything about the texts themselves? Contrary to what you might think, this class session proposes that literary texts that survive are definitely not “timeless” so much as they are open to new things. And in the idiosyncrasies of their openness to the new—especially, to new media—we can gain important insights into the texts themselves. Join Professor Goode in this virtual classroom for a preview of what classes for undergraduate students in the Department of English are like.
