A&S | Maxwell Virtual Sample Class - Experiencing Time Through Chinese Film

Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 6:00 PM until 7:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

It's commonly expressed that our “sense of time has changed”: sped up, slowed down, rendered static, jumbled, and disrupted. Cinema has been experimenting on, playing with, and deconstructing the conventional understanding of “time” or more than 130 years. Led by Professor Darwin Tsen, this sample class discussion introduces how movies from the Chinese-speaking world engage our senses of time. You'll pick up some basic skills that will give you an eye for cinema, the start of becoming a lifelong connoisseur of film. You'll also get a glimpse into what courses offered by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences are like. Professor Tsen was awarded the Meredith Early Career Teaching Recognition Award  in 2024 on the strength of this class! No prior experience or knowledge is needed - come as you are.
