A&S | Maxwell Virtual Sample Class - A “Flash” Introduction to Flash Nonfiction

Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 6:00 PM until 7:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

What’s a story you’ve always wanted to tell? Join Syracuse writing instructor Ivy Kleinbart for a class discussion that will mimic a writing course that she teaches here on campus. This class will introduce the genre of flash nonfiction, one of our culture’s most popular literary genres, and inspire you to tell your story in this brief and condensed form. You’ll analyze a few sample pieces published by the acclaimed online magazine, Brevity, today’s “go-to” source for edgy and experimental flash nonfiction. Alongside your peers in this class, you'll examine some of the techniques flash nonfiction writers use to hook their readers. Then, you'll spend a few minutes writing and see what comes up! This will be a fun example of what courses in the Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition are like. No prior experience with creative writing is necessary.
