How To Be a Good Listener… Literally! (Virtual Sample Class)

Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 7:00 PM until 8:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

Join Professor Ellen Hebden, a cultural anthropologist and ethnomusicologist, for a conversation about listening: How we listen, why we listen, and how listening differs from person to person. Drawing on music and dance from rituals, nightclubs, and wellness spaces, we'll explore how humans use sound as a technology for healing and connection, whether it be with spirits, with each other, or with ourselves. You'll walk away with new tools for noticing your sonic environment, and a deeper understanding of how hearing impacts, and is impacted by, culture.
