Sample Class: The Realities of Interstellar Travel (Virtual)

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at 8:00 PM until 9:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

You may have imagined time dilation, seen depictions of black holes, and considered possibilities around interstellar travel while watching movies like Project Hail Mary or Interstellar, or diving into classic sci-fi novels. But did you know that the real experts on these topics are right here at Syracuse? In this sample class, you'll meet Professor Eric Coughlin from the Department of Physics. Professor Coughlin will take you through thought experiments about special relativity and relativistic time dilation, showing you the science behind the time travel depicted in your favorite sci-fi stories. You'll have the chance to test your knowledge by answering his questions about the nature of life moving close to the speed of light, and you're welcome to ask questions of your own.

No prior knowledge of class topics is necessary. Come as you are, and be ready to learn!
